What is Hepatitis?

In simple words, inflammation of the liver is referred to as Hepatitis. It can be caused by several factors, but the most common cause are the Hepatitis viruses. Some of the other causes are autoimmune hepatitis and the liver inflammation that takes place because of alcohol, toxins, drugs and medications. The seriousness of the disease varies and can differ from being self-limiting to scarring or liver cancer.

Types of Hepatitis

There are five hepatitis viruses causing five types of hepatitis. They are Hepatitis A, B, C, D & E.

  1. Hepatitis A is easily transmitted by drinking feces (of a patient of Hepatitis A) contaminated water.
  2. Sharing razors, having sex or injection drug use are the reasons of transmission of Hepatitis B.
  3. Direct contact with a Hepatitis C infected body fluid transmits Hepatitis C.
  4. The very serious type of Hepatitis is type D, which is caused by direct contact with infected blood.
  5. Not-so-common Hepatitis E is caused by drinking water contaminated by fecal matter or poor sanitation.

Symptoms of Hepatitis

Recently there was a report widespread Hepatitis outbreak in Ohio and many people didn’t know the symptoms to figure out what was going on.

All the Hepatitis types have common symptoms visible in the beginning of the damage, except Hepatitis B and C. B and C are chronic hepatitis and thus, do not show any symptoms until the liver is affected.  Here are common symptoms for other types:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Yellowing of eyes and skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Pale stool
  • Dark urine

It is vital to remember that you can’t declare yourself to be suffering from Hepatitis once you notice these symptoms. You need to see a doctor and let him know all the symptoms. The doctor will note the symptoms and declare if you have Hepatitis and if you do, it is infectious or non-infectious.

How common is Hepatitis?

Out of all the types of Hepatitis, type C is the most common. It transmits through any direct contact an infected body. It scars the liver and causes severe effects. Hepatitis A and D have a moderate possibility of occurring whereas Hepatitis B and E are the most uncommon types.
