Vitamin patches are transdermal patches which are adhesively applied on the skin to transfer a certain vitamin into the bloodstream to supply nutrients into the body.
It is a new way to take nutrients and a person need not take the help of pills to add the essential nutrients into his system. As in today’s world, everyone loves to opt for quick fixes which could easily be used to get the result. Hence, due to the increasing demand of patches for various diseases, many companies have been working to release patches for different health problems too, such as insomnia, acne, hangover, pain, angina, to name a few.
Advantages and Disadvantages
There are certain advantages as well as disadvantages associated with the use of these vitamin patches on the skin.
One of the advantages of using transdermal vitamin patches is that it releases the nutrients into the body at a slow and controlled rate. This helps to ensures the intake of vitamins into the body for a long time.
However, the disadvantage of using transdermal vitamin patches is that the molecules from these patches need to cross a thick barrier to enter the bloodstream. Only those molecules whose size is less than the pores in the membranes of the skin could only pass through it into the bloodstream.
Taking medication in the form of patches is beneficial for those people who face difficulty in taking drugs. However, one must keep a check on the overdose of drugs through vitamins. The condition of overdose could arise if either the patch is broken, or it is chewed or cut open.
Also, it should be noted that an adult patch should not be applied on the child skin as it would harm the patients due to overdose of medication into the body. For example, while using vitamin b12 transdermal patch, proper instructions written on the patch should be followed.
Although transdermal vitamin patches have made it possible for people to intake drugs in a controlled manner, still, there are certain companies which are using it for the sake of marketing their business. FDA has disapproved those vitamin patches which have been marketed for dietary purposes and released a strong message in the public to become aware of such products before buying them.
It cautioned that there are not sufficient evidences for the absorption of such patches through skin barrier. Also, it said the various transdermal patches have not benefited to the degree as these products claimed.
